CSE Master’s student Yunxing Dai has been selected as the first Barracuda Networks Fellow. This newly-funded fellowship provides support for a promising full-time master’s student who is pursuing a course of study leading to a career in the computer science industry. The fellowship provides support for Winter 2013 and includes the offer of an internship with Barracuda this summer.

Yunxing interned at Facebook in the summer of 2012, where he worked on filtering out spam messages in Facebook chat. After that, he spent the rest of that year as an intern at the cloud-related Silicon Valley startup Upthere. At Upthere, Yunxing worked as a full-stack engineer with responsibilities ranging from building a mini data center to optimizing runtime.

Yunxing claimed first prize in the 2012 Microsoft Big App Challenge and second prize in the 2011 MorningStar Programming Competition. In 2012, his team won third prize in the Facebook Campus Hackathon at the University of Michigan and was a Finalist of 2012 GreyLock Hackfest. In PennApps 2013, his team claimed the special prize provided by SoundCloud for a trip to Berlin.

After graduation, Yunxing plans to pursue a career in the computer science industry. His interests are in security in network and data storage. “People are moving everything, including computation and storage to the cloud,” Yunxing said. “It would be crucial to give them the confidence that their data is safe.”
