Prof. Elliot Soloway Selected for AECT Distinguished Development Award

Prof. Elliot Soloway, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and Professor in Computer Science and Engineering, School of Education, and School of Information, has been selected as the winner of the 2012 AECT Distinguished Development Award by the Association for Educational Communications and Technology. The award will be presented at AECT 2012 in Louisville, Kentucky, which takes place from Oct. 30 – Nov. 3, 2012.

Prof. Soloway was selected for the award based on his work in technology-based curricula for K-12 education and for his vision in advocating for the use of mobile computing for learning.

Prof. Soloway’s research interests include the use of technology in education and the development of software that takes into consideration the unique needs of learners. He is a co-founder of GoKnow!, which provides MLE, the Mobile Learning Environment software for handheld environments. Prof. Soloway teaches courses in mobile applications development and encourages his students to think entrepreneurially about their projects and the opportunities that exist in the mobile development space.

Prof. Soloway received both his PhD and MS in Computer and Information Science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He joined the faculty at Michigan in 1988 and is associated with the Interactive Systems Lab. Prof. Soloway is highly regarding for his inspirational teaching style, and has been recognized for this with a Thurnau Professorship for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, the U-M Golden Apple Award for Teaching, and Distinguished Teaching Awards from U-M and UMass. He has twice been named Teacher of the Year in EECS by students in the U-M HKN Honor Society.
